Information & resources on frog conservation.

Javiera Cisternas

Javiera Tahi-812Javiera came from Chile to study a PhD with Professor Phil Bishop in the Department of Zoology, University of Otago. Her research focuses on the conservation management of Archey’s frogs (Leiopelma archeyi) using a multidisciplinary approach. She is studying the translocation and further supplementation of Archey´s frogs from Whareorino Forest to Pukeokahu, Pureora Forest Park. She is using a research framework that bridges the Māori knowledge and potential collaboration of Māori iwi with the biological and ecological studies necessary to determine the success of the Whareorino-Pukeokahu translocation. She will also use Citizen Science projects to involve local communities with the assessment of Archey´s frog establishment in Pukeokahu. She will frequently visit iwi to promote close working relationships among the individuals involved. Building on this developing relationship, Javiera will document the current and past mātauranga (Māori Traditional Ecological Knowledge) of native frogs.
Additionally, Javiera is investigating aspects of nest site fidelity in Archey’s frogs and issues concerning selecting suitable habitat for this species for future translocations.Javiera Grid-100-920
